OK, I have tried to understand what the causes are for the excessively high number of blown SVT engines we have read about on the forum. I understand the oil pan baffle, hard prolonged right turn issue, etc.
What I am still trying to understand, is do we know if there is a correlation between using synthetic oil and the blown engines? I tseems as if everyone I have seen reported, was using Mobil 1.
Is this a fluke, or do we have a "foaming" problem with the Mobil 1 that does not occur with dino oil? I do a lot of runs where I take the SVT up to 135-140 so I don't want a "nasty" surprise of synthetic is the wrong way to go.

Just out of curiousity, does anyone have any hard numbers on how many Contour owners have had engine replacements?

It is a good question that I havent gotten a answer to. As far as I can recall, all oil starvation related disasters that reported oil type have been with synthetics. Most were Mobil One and one was AMSOIL. I sent emails to both companies and got no reply from Mobil but AMSOIL sent alot of test data showing good antiaeration protection compared with some other oils. In talking with Chris Reinke of team Contour, he mentioned that in an earlier race car (not a Contour)he had a problem with areation with dino Quaker State that was solved (per tip from another racer)by switching to Valvoline. So, it seems that under racing situations at least, different types of dino may have different froathing potential. Whether this applies to synthetics, I dont know.
I am still running Mobil One myself, but I have thought about switching to Valvoline dino. But, so many performance cars run Mobile One can it really be a problem?? Most likely, this can be explained by the high % of SVT drivers running synthetic. Most likely....

Stupid question, but why does my SVT manual specifically state not to use synthetic oil?

Alot of people on these forums use Mobil 1. Also the type of person who is likely to drive aggresively in long right turns and cause oil frothing, is also probably the same type of person who is going to care about putting Mobil 1 in their car.

It doesn't prohibit synthetic use, but recommends allowing a generous break-in period before switching to synthetic. Might want to re-read that manual... ------------------ Brinn Riley Melbourne, FL '00 Black/Tan SVT Contour #560 www.mindspring.com/~cdw27 cdw27@mindspring.com

Anyone blow their engines using Royal Purple Synthetic?

I have no data, but the synthetic and blown motor thing just HAS to be coincidence, as fast4dr and Dan Nixon mention...
The best proof would have to be what Dan said about almost ALL ultra high performance cars running syn. from the factory. There's a reason they use it...

SVT states that they do not "require/endorse" you to use synthetics, but if you do, to wait for atleast 4500-6000 miles for proper engine break-in.
