That is the hard way to do it, and it does not work as well. Here is an easier way, Duplicate optimesed, choose paintbrush and color, color the thing grey, then use vivid, and the color you want,set the brush at about 10% and go over the object again and again until it looks right. Then with the close stamp tool just draw the new colors over the original picture (sounds complicated but is actually faster after the first time, right now most of my stuff takes between 5 and 15 minutes, these bikes were about 5-10 minutes each)
