Hey Gang,
Ok so I want to run AMSOIL in my 99 SE. So I drop them a line asking which kit, and if the ford friction modifier can be used with their syn ATF. This is what I get...
^^^Start^^^ The correct AMSOIL dual remote bypass kit for this vehicle is the BMK13. It comes complete except for the filters themselves. Because of the broad use of this kit we recommend filters based on the capacity of the engine's oil sump. For this size capacity we recommend our AMSOIL SDF15 full flow filter and the BE90 bypass filter.
We are not familiar with any friction modifier additives required by Ford for the Contour. If this is true there will be a Technical Service Bulletin on file at the dealership. Our AMSOIL Synthetic Universal Automatic Transmission Fluid is definitely recommended for the Contour, but we can't really recommend the use of an additive (even Ford's) without knowing what it is supposed to do.
Our manuals show the XT-M5-QS part number to only be used on the Ford Focus. We have no comparable product. ^^^End^^^
So are they not in the know? Or am I misreading something off the FAQ in the trouble shifting while cold topic?
Any help would be great, plus any comments on those using AMSOIL now.
Thanks, Ray

It is to help the syncro's bite and aid their longevity when using a synthetic.
Synthetic is a great lubricant. Actually a little too good in this case. But it's extra thermal protection is great for a tranmission.
Also IIRC Ford's new "Honey Colored" fluid for the MTX-75 is basically a synthetic blend with additive itself...

Ok so I should go ahead and add the friction modifer as stated. Cool. I'll drop AMSOIL a line. I think they might not have noticed I said I had an MTX75 manual and think I have a slush box.
Hopefully this fixes my shifting problems.
Perchance do you use AMSOIL? Just looking for comments.
Thanks for the fast response, Ray

Thanks for the fast response, Ray I use Amsoil in both my cars and in the trans mission of the SVT.This will CURE the cold shift problems as soon as you put it in the tranny! I have had it in there for three years and no problems shifts great even the past few days when its been 20's here!

More to the saga..
^^^Start^^^ I reviewed the information both from the club and from Ford's TSB. Actually the Ford bulletin does not make mention of any friction modifiers. Apparently Ford's new fluid has the desired effect when used alone. Friction modifiers are designed to alter the coefficient of friction in either direction so we're not really sure if the club members are going for more or less friction.
The Contour club members are certainly free to experiment if they desire, but until we have more information we are not going to recommend our fluid to be used in place of Ford's XT-M5-QS, with or without additional modifiers. Our product has not been compared against this fluid nor has it been tested with the friction modifier. This may change in time, but for now, we recommend using Ford's corrective measures as opposed to The Contour/Mystique Owners Club fix. ^^^End^^^
I don't know what to think, Ray

No friction mod on Autos.....yes it helps the syncros 'bite'...use the tranny cocktail only on MTX75 boxes........

Ok you added just the Amsoil to your MTX75? Make me a bit leary. I'd think it would be harder to get the gears to mess since the sycros aren't working as well.
I just don't want to ad the modifier to amsoil and findout it adds too much or something.
hmmm... Terry "cocktail" means the modifier right? not the XT-M5-QS. At 15-20 bucks a quart I'd think mobil or ams would be a better deal.
Still unsure myself...
Thanks for the feedback though! Ray

Using amsoil and the friction modifier here, and it makes a NOTICEABLE difference from the stock red stuff. Only thing is after 50K, its starting to lose its efficiency....Time for a fluid change. Oh yes, I live in Canada, so I can confirm it improves cold shifting caracteristics dramatically. Not that it did not get cold in Virginia recently...
