Yes I agree safety lights & gauges are useful, but relying on them is not the proper way to maintain your vehicle. Be it a $1k commuter or a $60k luxury barge...
Nothing beats proper maintenance! Checking your fluids every time you fill it is cheap insurance over relying on a flaky sensor which only gets worse with age...
The same thing can be said for relying on the knock sensor because you want to save a few pennies a tank.
In order for the knock sensor to work there has to be detonation present. Therefore damage is occuring. Plus it's not tripped by the minor detonation and that still is damaging.
Being lazy, being cheap, you reap what you sow...
