Don't be afraid to torque on the shift knob a bit... it's on REALLY tight. Trust us, you won't break it. I thought the same thing when I first tried unscrewing mine.

Okay...if I get the car, I'll do it...after I get a new knob. Was not realy worried about the knob itself...it was the torque being transmitted to the shaft and breaking it that concerned me.

Okay, I gave it one more shot on my current car after-all and got it to start loosening...seemed like I did not have to twist it as hard as when I tried and failed the other day.
