Rachel,
there are two ways to bend pipe, one is to crush bend and the other is mandrel bent.
Crush bent is seen here. If you'll look at where the pipe is bent, you'll notice how the pipe is ripply. The best way for me to describe it is to take a straw, this would be the tailpipe, and bend it around a smooth edge, like a dinner table.
The straw get's bent, but the inside bend is not smooth, thus restricting air flow and changing the diameter of the straw.
It works very well, but isn't the best.
Mandrel bent, not sure exactly how it's done, but the pipe stays the same diameter and smooth all the way throughout. This is the best way to go as it doesn't restrict air flow. The only drawback is the cost to do this.
