I had the how-to on putting one of those into a `85-`91 Grand Am. The only issue was some major hood clearance issues (ie. Supercharger sits through the hood!). I always wanted to do it but I didn't have the time, money, or knowledge to do it. On the bright side, I am glad I never did. Driving that car compared to driving the Contour I atually know how poorly it would have been able to do any kind of twisties.

im guessing that's KPH? If not that speedo is way off...180 on what doesn't look like a highway...need lots of room to break 180. And, that's a 3.8lv6? A-la a gtp right? Must really move that car but not that fast, unless heavily modded right?

looks like to me that his tach is hooked into his speedo. Watch the first time his car shifts how the speedo drops.

It is in km/h so his top speed at the end of the ideo is 180km/h = 112mph. That is hella fast... Something looks fishy to me, but I of course could be wrong... 2 questions, 1) why did his speedo drop like that, was it cause he was spinning to 75km/h (50mph!!!) and when he got traction then his speed dropped to the real speed??? 2) why isnt the tach working? that car makes it from 0-112 in 20 seconds The car does sound like it makes 3 shifts. I dont know, it has alot of validity to it, but there are those 2 small things that confused me... -Nick

The tires might have been spinning at a rate of 55 mph, but the whole car wasnt going, it just freaked the computer and thats what the dash read, when he stopped spinning that was how fast the car was going, he had not gone over that speed, do you see what Im saying? Oh and correct me if Im wrong, didnt PhatSVT's contour go 0-115 in 15 seconds?

i see what you're saying....something does flying by really fast towards the end....but it just doesn't seem legit...
i don't know...no tach working, doesn't even sound like its being pushed....camera is pretty steady.....
i don't know...call me crazy...but i think that was rigged somehow.

first of all the photo is a fake. The strut bar in the 1st pic is there, then in the second it is missing. Second, of all the car took 8sec to reach 100km. Third, the if the car is an auto, the stock transmisson won't be able to handle that kind of power or torque, and if it is a manual, where did he get the manual to support the 3.8 except from the camaro?

The pics do look fishy but I've heard of the car before. It's a concept that GM is working on for 03 or 04. Totally redesigned drive train. S/C 3800, 5 spd, AWD, suposedly it is so GM can try and get more involved with rally and auto X. I'll see if I can find more info.

The picture is not fake! Yes it's in km/h. He's Canadian. I'll try and dig up the website. He has step by step photos of the install. (It was done a while go) Even if it was bone stock That's 240HP/280TQ in a 2700lb car (2600 + 100 for larger engine) I'm sure you can all do that math! ATX or not it's fast! (if stock GTP is 14.9-15.0 and weighs 3400lbs!!!) BTW - I timed it (video) 3 times. ~6.5 0-60mph (with wheelspin to boot) ~14 0-100mph (New Mustang GT is 14 @ 100 in the 1/4) I wouldn't want to race it... Okay I would...

Wrong. If you look at the second pic, you can see part of the strut bar on the right, just before it goes into the shadow. Also, you don't know that the automatic trans didn't come with the engine. Maybe he just fabbed a new engine cradle to hold everything. warmonger

So he spent $5300 for this project and still has rear drums?
Could have done a turbo on his 4 banger for less money, less time, less weight, and gotten the same power (well a little less torque). Unless of course the motor wouldn't take the boost.
Well, I give him credit for commitment and the unique factor. :p

Do you think it would be much different than doing this to a 94 Grand Am? My girlfriend is buying one for $2000 and I have been seriously thinking about this! I know some of them come with a 3.4L and isn't the 3.8L just a stroked version of the 3.4L? Me and her both want to do this really bad especially since the Bonneville SEEi we were also looking at already got bought. I think that would be a pretty decent sleeper! He He He....240HP Grand Am.....sweet!

I'd think with that power-to-weight ratio he'd be able to pull better than a 14s quarter...sounds like a nice tech job, but lacking in expected performance.
If speed was his main objective, wouldn't there be better ways than dropping in that engine? Granted, there's no substitute for more cubes under the hood, but in this case I'd have to wonder about the execution of it all...
I love my Contour to death, but my 'vette is still my #1 baby. There's money to be made in racing. I should know. I put a lot of it there. You can make a small fortune in racing. Start with a large one. How fast do you want to go...how much money do you have? You can fix a lot of things, but you can't fix stupid!

No. The early 90's Grand Am (and Buick Skylark, Olds Calais, etc) carried a 3.3 Litre V6 (the '3300')--introduced in 1989--which was an offshoot of the 231 ci (3.8 Litre), 90-degree '3800' V6...itself traceable back to the old 215ci Buick V8 of the early 60's. The 3100 and 3400 later used in the Grand Am (both 3.1 Litre and 3.4 Litre, repectively, and widely used across the GM product line) are traced back to the 60-degree 2.8 Litre V6 introduced around 1980 in the 'X' cars (Citation, Skylark, Phoenix, & Omega).

i still think this thing is quite fishy, the 3800 S/C is HUGE!! now seriously where does the transmission come from? The stock 5speed will just tear to pieces and the only 4speed in the buicks and pontiacs won't fit either, they too are too big to fit. Unless he shaved the inside of his engine bay and did alot of custom work to his cavalier then maybe, and in the video he still takes 8 secs to do 100km.

Well, I give him credit for commitment and the unique factor. :p That's Canadian. Only like $400 US funds... :p Also half was labor. Ouch!!! In order to get the same power from the 4-cylinder it would need a rebuild with forged parts. Cost would be close. He can put simple mods on the large 3.8 and make a good chunk more power reliably... (ala-GTP folks) BTW - the only major advantage to rear disc over rear drum is a little weight savings. Also J-bodies NEVER came with rear disc's stock so the retro kits are pricey! ...and SVTGUY "Get over it!" :p It's real and like I said it's not even that new... I read about last year on the J-body site... Atleast go to his site and look for yourself!
