UMMM according to the chicago autoshow I was there in 1991 and they said it was a contour.

the name and the type of car are two very different things-
yes it is called a Contour- but the car IIRC was on the Taurus line

I have a picture of that car from a different angle (front 3/4); it's from Car & Driver's 1992 yearbook. Here's the caption:

«Ford Contour»

«A remarkable new in-line eight-cylinder engine is mounted transversally in the front of Ford's newest concept car, the Contour. Power from the new engine is directed through gears located in the center of the crankshaft. This arrangement leaves room to fit a large engine under a very short hood and leaves space enough for six passengers».
