Tires make a big difference, too. If I were to launch my car the way I do with stock tires, they'd spin themselves to vapor. Kudos to my Dunlops. They take punishment well.

Ok so we know the numbers on speed but what are they on price? according to this board you can buy a used 00 svt for like... a dollar. Whats a s2000 cost?

$32K new for an S2000.. I've actually seen used ones as low as $22K on Auto Trader, with relatively low miles.

anybody can beat a s2000 if the driver of the s2k isn't ready. I've heard that if you launch at anything less then 7-8,000 rpm's you can only get a 8.5 sec 0-60. You can beat that time in a escort zx2. Its only those 7-8 grand launches that get the 5 second range 0-60 times. Unlike a bigger displacement (ie. V8) engine where you can make up for a missed launch with more throtle.
