I don't think you can get arrested in NJ for excessive speeds, but I think you have a mandatory court appearance if you go over 99mph. I was in traffic court one day and saw the judge suspend quite a few licenses for going 99mph in a 55mph on the turnpike. Dunno how that would work for people who aren't local to the area.

I didn't get arrested for 98 in a 55, just a BIG ****ING TICKET!!!

Perry's right about the lawyer thing. Truck drivers do it all the time.

That wouldn't be a race.

PackRat, they've already gotten advice from the traffic ticket guru on the mailing list to get a lawyer to help them out. Since John may lose his license over it, he'll definitely be fighting it.

Yes, but if the officer has them on video as indicated, they have no chance of winning. Better to cut their losses and beg the judge for mercy rather than pay a lawyer in addition to any fines they get when convicted.

NJ and TN are both part of the Non-Resident Violator Compact, so yes the conviction/points will transfer, as will any license suspension/revocation.

We are going to fight it! When we received the summons, he checked the radar box as to how he clocked us. Now, how can that be when we were so far ahead of him? And, how was the speed the same for all four of us, as we were all passing each other? Plus, I would like to see the video of me breaking the double yellow. I know that I did *not* break it, unless I broke it right before the dashed yellow lines. I don't know, but I know I will be sending an email to the TicketGuy, and see if he can recommend a lawyer in the TN area.

Well, I guess that answers my question whether or not if these points are transferrable to home. Definately time to get a lawyer and plea it down.

Depends on the state. In IL, you would have to show or they issue a warrant for your arrest.

I'm just being realistic here. When the judge/jury sees a video tape of them passing other traffic at those speeds, and that vidoe tape displays their speed along with the officer's speed, do you really think that they won't be convicted? Time to take some responsibility for their actions, stand up, and admit that they were boneheads. Time to act like adults, even if they don't drive like one.

Depends on the radar gun he used. If it was Lidar, he can get each vehicle independantly quite easy. That may also explain why none of your radar detectors went off.

If it was Radar, there are units that allow an officer to select "Fastest target mode", meaning he will clock whoever is the fastest of the group.

Either way, if he has you on tape, you are screwed. They could always drop the speeding charges and convict all of you on drag racing and reckless driving charges. If they did that, you would likely be facing jail time in addition to fines and license suspension/revocation.

We passed the truck at about 80-85mph tops.

I doubt the trooper could pace us because we had a 80mph head start on him even before he pulled out onto the road.
