It is illegal to remove an airbag from a car w/o government approval. There is some process to go through with the NHTSA to get permission to install a switch or whatever. Mostly for people under 5'4" and pregnant women.
Through the end of 99 (I think) there had been 3.3 million air bag deployments. About 5000 lives were saved by the airbags (had it not been for the airbag, the person would have died). 152 deaths were caused by airbags (had it not been for the airbag, the person would have lived), plus countless other severe injuries.
