i cut down my stock shifter the other day but then had trouble getting into 1st & 2nd gear, had the dealer check it out, they found half of an orange plastic ring laying under the shifter boot. they were not sure what it was, they ordered a new sfifter to see how it is assembled. They tell me $90.00 for yhe shifter and $250.00 for labor of installing this. whats up can't i just install a new B&M for &140.00 on my own. the say it alot of work, thay have to go from the bottom and disconnect some linkage. pleases help im really confused what to do. and what is the plastic ring?
thanks

It is hard to tell what your problem is.
If it is internal to transmission, then it is going to cost more than the dealer quoted you.
If it is just increased effort for shift because you chopped the top off, then you should just get a b&m.
You need to find out what the problem is before we can suggest ways to fix it.

well it had a new tranny put in 2 weeks ago, it ran fine till i cut down the rod it must have been when i loosened up the 2 hex bolts that hold the shifter down so i could slide the reverse lockout off , it goes into gear but it just have to nudge it alittle.

ok , if anybody can help, they are telling me that i need to replace the shifter and that will take care if the problem. BUT the shifter unbolts from the bottom, and they have to move the exhaust shield, and exhaust to get to the bolts. is this correct or am i getting the shaft, and i should just replace with a B&M myself ? not that difficult is it ?
thanks

unless there is more than you are not telling us, they are feeding you a line. the shifter is easily accesible from the top.
now a shift cable, that's a different story . . .
It's all about balance.

I just put in my B&M shifter last weekend-I LOVE IT-!! Easy to install even if you aren't that mechanically inclined. Reverse lockout even works. One of my favorite mods!! As for that little orange circle thing. I noticed it when I pulled out my old shifter. Mine was like the seal on a soda bottle, but more heavy duty. Mine was broke too. No clue where it came from but it isn't affecting anything for me, so I don't think that is your problem.
