I think GM builds the perfect SUVs. The Suburban is about as big as they need to be. They can tow ANYTHING, room for 9, and STILL have enough room for gear inside. But the most HYPOCRITICAL thing Ive seen is this "Anti-SUV" group, which started a dealership FULL of Suburbans on fire. Burned all the SUVs. But when the press came to interview the leader of this Anti-SUV group...what was he driving? A TOYOTA 4-RUNNER! AN SUV!!! ...ass...Good, the Excursion had no use anyway, if people need to haul 9 people, a 2-horse trailer, and everyones gear....GET A SUBURBAN! They look nicer, handle better, ride better, brake better....need I say more? :p

I live in Tree Hugger central (Boulder, CO) and all I see around here at NEW Subaru's, NEW Audi's (lots of S4's) and smaller SUV's(RAV4, CRV, etc). The guys out on the ranches use the big trucks and that's ok. They have a use for them. It's the way the truck was perceived to be marketed (to suburban types - which I bet it wasn't) that helped bring about the backlash. No one wanted to see a soccer mom ferrying her kids around in one. Ford decided that removing the black eye the truck became was worth more to them than the dwindling profits the truck offered. No one likes bad PR. And like others have mentioned, the Chevy killed it in sales. As for the Sierra Club, the average income of their members is 72,000 a year...I bet they can afford nicer cars than soot spewing Volvo's and Civics. No need to propogate stereotypes here.

A Suburban owner on another board suggested that the Suburban is popular because of it's capabilities, despite it's size--that many of the people who buy the Suburban would be happier with a smaller vehicle that could tow as much and carry as much. Basically they are putting up with the size of the Suburban.
They also suggested that this is why the Expedition failed-it was too big for what it actually towed and carried. Or maybe too big for what the target market was actually intending to tow and carry. It was big for big's sake, and it was probably over that line of how big an SUV "ought" to be to be easy to park and drive.

"But internal combustion engines are ICKY"... I somehow doubt that a person who has that mindset (which probably all Greenpeace members do) wants to spend very much money on maintaining that icky internal combustion engine, hence the multicolored smoke it soon starts producing. And the college-age ones don't have much money anyway. Although it is interesting that such a group of political liberals has a higher than average income. Maybe they feel guilty? good riddens! you can get excursions for a song here in MA. i saw one in a dealer lot, sticker was $43k with a big window sign that said "Save $7,000!!!)
from my POV: the number of Excursions drawing horses or boats or trailers that i have seen -> 2
the number of Excursions at construction sites (including the BigDig) -> 0
the number of Excursions with a signle female driver on a cell phone, hogging the left lane at 55 MPH, and putting on make-up -> 20+
fuggem!

I remember reading a review of the Excursion. They said while the Expedition, Tahoe and even the Suburban handled reasonably well for their size, the Excursion was extremely sloppy and ponderous (which would be obvious!). They said unless you NEEDED seating for 9 and needed more room than an Expedition or Tahoe, get a Suburban. IMHO, one of the best looking SUV's is the Mexican market RamCharger.
