If you joined the military you would be separated during boot camp and probably during your MOS training. Once you made it to your first duty station (assuming it wasn't an unaccompanied tour overseas) you would have the opportunity to move your family to you.
The burning question, though, is how to pay for things while your in boot camp? I don't know how that works.
Also, being that you're from Canada, the military rules regarding family could be completely different.
