1700 will get you a 2 bedroom, 1 bath apartment with a porch and about 1000 square feet in an immediate boston suburb. 1700 in downtown will get you a place to put your cardboard box.
waltham is still very affordable. i have a friend whose fiance works at hanscom. very nice people over there. also, Lincoln is a beautiful town which has remained relatively undiscovered by the "trendy" set. so it is somewhat affordable. you could probably find a 1200 sq ft ranch house in Lincoln for about 1700/month if you were thinking of buying. Maynard is also nice and affordable.
another place to look is Woburn. a little closer to the NAWTH SHOWA (north shore) area of massachusetts, which is the best area to be in.
