I suggest taking a serious look at the WRX Wagon - my wife's been driving an Outback Sport for 4 years now. It gets a lot of approving looks from the young and surfer crowds. I love the handling (we got it when I had the Stealth RT; it was the closest and most fun handling than anything else we looked at and still is) and the five door hatch holds tons of stuff. Much more useful than the WRX Sedan.
Hell yeah, my girlfriend has an 2002 Outback Sport (didn't want to pay the extra thousands for the WRX but also wanted a step up from the base Impreza model) and it's a great car. It's sporty yet rugged and still has the Impreza styling. If I were ever to get a WRX though, it would definitely be the wagon.
