In the Line of Fire
The Ford Crown Victoria is the nation's most popular police car. Eighty-five percent of all patrol cars in the United States are Ford's police interceptor cruisers. Yet in the last six years, gas tank explosions due to rear-end collisions in police car fires have killed nearly a dozen police officers.
Often, the officers were not seriously hurt but died because they were trapped inside the car, unable to escape the fireball following the crash. Correspondent Susan Candiotti examines whether U.S. police officers face an extra risk every time they get inside their patrol car in the CNN Presents documentary, "In the Line of Fire."
