You're right. I remember the 1993 Mazda 626 ES-V6 was a hot little number. 164 hp DOHC 24V quad-cam V6 with a tight suspension, 5 speed manual, 4 wheel discs, available leather seating, moonroof, alloys with 205/55VR15 summer tires.
Also very smooth modern styling (still looks good today) and I think it was Car and Driver that rated it #1 in a comparo versus Camry and Accord.
Then it was all downhill for the 626.
