The motor in my first car (78 VW Dasher with 1.6L gas I4) sure would have lasted forever. Too bad the car fell apart around it. But you could change the oil without lifting the car.

If Taurus's were junk, why were they the #1 seller for 10 years? We had like 4 or 5 of them, and never had a problem with any of them. All company cars that saw ALOT of miles too..
I'd say a Taurus or a Honda. Both will last forever. My g/f's got an 87 Civic with 175K and it will probably go for another 100K.
Or, use that $4500 for a cheap lease (think Focus, Neon, Hyundai, Kia, etc). $4500 is $125/mo for 36 months.

Toyotas are bulletproof. Get an older celica or camry or somethin of the like and it would be a pretty nice car thats VERY reliable. ><>David<><

Mustang 5.0s are pretty reliable(mine has 133K on it), and being a RWD car are also pretty easy to work on. Only bad thing is that they use more gas, but if that's a concern there are a lot of 2.3L 4-cylinder Mustangs out there (no idea about the reliability of that engine though..)

Best bang for the buck, but probably doesn't pass the sporty test is the Geo/Chevy Prism (really a Toyota Corolla, IIRC).
Toyota reliability, Chevrolet depreciation.

Grassroots Motorsports just did a feature on what cars to buy for $5000, $10000, and $15000... According to them the best value for a "fun" daily driver under $5000 was a Mitsubishi Eclipse or Eagle Talon (AWD Turbo models)... Dunno about the reliability... but they are nice looking cars that are fun for sure.
Good gas mileage, pretty reliable, and cheap sounds like a Cavalier... but they are slow and ugly.
