You have to understand soccer a little to appreciate it to its fullest. To me, the entire game is exciting because I can appreciate the buildup to the attack, etc. To those that do not know much about soccer, I can see how it would be boring. Just like football -- if you don't know what a first down is, you won't know why the crowd cheered after a play that gained a foot.
But like I said, soccer will never be as big as football or basketball because it's not designed for commercials. Therefore, companies don't want to put money into it.
