Let's see...during (or close to) the World Cup: an NBA team won the title for the 3rd straight year, MLB went through steroids/strike talk, and an NHL team with bought hall of famers won the Stanley Cup.

The World Cup made a joke out of American sports. It is the best/most exciting sporting event in the world.

However, it will never succeed in America, since it doesn't revolve around commercial breaks. The most popular sports in America do.
Trying to stir up a little controversy, eh?

The world cup was tolerable because of a decent showing by the US. But the sport itself is still utterly boring....there, now I will stir up some trouble.

I have been boycotting baseball since the last strike.

I am happy to say I haven't spent a dime on anything baseball related since.

Corporations with several thousand tickets used for clients, employees, etc are the ones that contribute to a large percentage of the ticket revenue. In some cities, like Atlanta, corporate ticket purchasing can account for better than half of the tickets sold in any given year.

You have to understand soccer a little to appreciate it to its fullest. To me, the entire game is exciting because I can appreciate the buildup to the attack, etc. To those that do not know much about soccer, I can see how it would be boring. Just like football -- if you don't know what a first down is, you won't know why the crowd cheered after a play that gained a foot.

But like I said, soccer will never be as big as football or basketball because it's not designed for commercials. Therefore, companies don't want to put money into it.

I stopped buying baseball cards in 94 when the World Series was cancelled, but I just love going to the ballpark to watch a game.

I like the entire atmosphere of a major league game. The sound of the fans cheering for a hard hit ball, the sight of a perfectly groomed field, the smell of fresh cooked hotdog, the taste of a cold beer on a hot summer day. And there is no sweeter sound in the world than a bat hitting a ball right on the sweet spot. Gotta go to one game a year to keep my fix.

Going to see Cinci host the Mets on the 21st.

100% agreed here. Any sport where the players are paid more than The President of the United States (typically WAY more), and go on strike because they are not getting enough, can kiss my a$$!

So true... But you can't be surprised that much. More and more we all realize that in America, like Jerry says, "It's all about the money!" frown

Only gripe I have with the All-Star game was no MVP confused That should not have happened, pick co-MVP's or something. Ending the game in the 11th was the right call.

Yes, the players are spoiled rotten and its actually the owners fault for allowing this to go on for so long.

How many ballplayers today would go to war for the USA like Ted Williams and Bob Fellar did in the prime of their carreer's......

There's a safety for the Cardinals, I think, that just turned down a 3.6 million dollar contract so he could enlist in the Army and go to Ranger school (this, just a year after he turned down a 9 million dollar contract w/ the Rams). Not a baseball player, but....
