ok - you guys n gals know your stuff...

need to buy a new phone, don't want to spend more than $150, it must have the following

  • 900Mhz or 2.4Ghz (my only hesitation on 2.4Ghz is that i run a wireless LAN in my house at the same frequency) smile
  • keypad on both the phone and base station
  • answering machine
  • speakerphone

got ideas? laugh

900mhz
Panasonic KX-TC1743 $89.99 at Staples
2.4ghz
Panasonic KX-TG2583W $149.99 at Staples

the 2.4 is obviously the main difference, the 2.4 ghz unit is also shock and splash resistant.

Brands I highly reccomend you avoid:
Siemens
Sony
Toshiba

Any more Q's let me know, I have the privilage of selling these things all the time :p

Hey Toadster,

You liking your fridge? (Was it you buying a fridge?)

I got myself the Sony SPP-S2730. 2 phones in 1. It's a normal corded telephone with speakerphone and caller ID memory/screen. Also has a cordless handset (2.4 GHz). No answering machine, but I have a separate one of those.

The phone has so many features it's not even funny. It supports multiple cordless handsets (up to 4!). The caller ID can be accessed from either the base or any handset. Quick dial memory can be sent to base or handset.

For some reason it was on blowout for $79 Canadian. That's essentially 2 phones for $45 US. I think regular is more like $149 US.

Panasonics have always been rated highly by Consumer Reports. I saw a Dateline/Consumer Reports test on cordless phones a while back when the gigahertz started coming out. They got a bunch of cordless phones and tested them for distance/reception in a straight line in a football parking lot. The gigahertz didn't do that much better and they cost too much for the little gain. Stick w/Panasonic.

Panasonic all the way, best 2.4 GHz technology, and by far and away the most reliable phone available.

I have VTech 2.4 GHz. Can put up to 4 phones on base station (I have 2 phones). It's cool. Phones look like one piece cell phones. Base has battery back-up (after you buy extra battery) so works even during power loss. You can get speakerr phone base or answering machine base. Phone have speaker phone built in so I have the answer machhine base (3 V-Mail boxes) Good sound quality. Very happy. About $129 for Base with one phone. 2nd phones are about $69.

Was highly rated in Consumers Reports. I don't use consumers for car ratings, but they are good for washers and phones.

-edit: VTech sounds like Zetec..hehehe....

I've got an old Sony 25 channel that I've had for years. I think I bought it back in 96. That thing has been put through so much sh## (thrown against walls, sat on, beer spills, etc.) that I'm quite impressed with it. Don't know about the new 2.4g technology but I've heard that the 900mhz is very close to it as far as reception and security go.

I use the Siemens 2400 series phones. 2.4GHz, awesome sound quality, and good overall build quality. The phones are 'networkable' and can be put all over the house.
