To be honest...most of America is really, really boring.
There is a lot to see in this great country when traveling by land. I forgive you and I ask God to forgive you.

Kathryn, make the drive and any way you go, enjoy the show!!

I second the motion. I have driven from Chicago to Monterrey Mexico (about 1500 miles) I love driving. Most boring state has to be Arkansas. :p

bigwalton is planning the ultimate cross country trip.. Alaska to North Carolina. Now that's a trek!

As a kid, my family made the trip from Georgia to the west several times. Never really drove straight through, always stopped to smell the roses along the way. There's some beautiful countryside, but it does get pretty boring.

Hey, He's the one who made it boring in the first place. wink

I made the trip twice, both times taking about 4 days to make a bunch of side trips. Good way to do it if you have the time. When else are you going to see the Grand Canyon, White Sands Missile Base, Petrified Forest, etc. in one trip? smile

Have done the cross country thing before, I think it was a hoot.

Now, I know we are mostly car nuts, but can I suggest Amtrak? It's cheap, and you can get liqoured up and eat like a king!

i'm guessing it'll take about 24 or so hours, give or take a few. thats drive time, not counting sleep or breaks.

what about tolls... s'what im curious about too!

i believe it's almost a straight shot across the country that shouldn't be that much of a hassle compared to other zig-zag, crazy routes.
Detroit to Phoenix was 2000 miles. I made this drive 3 times. My best drive time was 28 hours in the SVT. My worst was the rent-a-truck which was 37 hours because I couldn't break 70.

If it's true that we are here to help others, then what exactly are the others here for?

Tell me more about this trip. I'm looking forward to the trip from St. Louis to your area, and then coming back with a little exhaust driven air pump attached to my car wink

Thanks,

I took 8 cross country trips from CT to Los Angeles where I was going to school. Don't remember the miles but it took 51 driving hours; split up any way you want. Tolls are essentially an East of the Mississippi phenomenon and didn't amount to much. Fondest memory is night driving in the Plains States where the roads are flat and arrow straight for a million miles. You end staring into oncoming headlights for three days before they pass. And then another set peeks up over the horizon...

Oh, and on the toll thing. I did I44 through Oklahoma and it was $3.50 from Joplin to Tulsa and another $3.50 from Tulsa to OK City. If your route includes that.

Yea, the urban elites refer to it as "flyover country".

Actually, though, if you ever are concerned about the lack of open spaces and overdevelopment in our country, or the declining amount of farmland, do take the trip (or at least look down from the windows in the plane).

You'll never be concerned again!

Brian
