I think it had fallen out of its nest and wasn't able to gain height yet. When it got away from me in the kitchen, it was able to fly, without gaining height, for about three feet.

I set it on the hill so the dog wouldn't eat it. It was gone this morning, there was a bird with the same song in the trees behind the house. I am assuming it was the bird.
