For the sake of being a good person.. for yourself, for others, not so you can stand in the middle and cop out of either side of the christian black or white. This is pretty much how i do things, I was raised catholic, i still have a lot of catholic values, but the church, not god, has scourned my faith.. (long before this priest scandal, i just find that humerous.. anyhow) So i decided to live like a good person, for me. I sleep well at night, I dont make enemies, and generally speaking, things are good. Should your acclaimed 'judgement day' ever arise, and low and behold the almighty stands in front of me and strikes me down because I strictly didnt believe in a book, or the words i was force fed as a child so be it. But i'd like to think that such a powerful diety who should judge my so-called afterlife, or soul, however you believe... would look at my actions, not my criticisms. What always rubbed me wrong was why would a God so giving with free will, freedom of thought etc. kick your ass to the curb for disagreeing, or questioning these things with the very free will s/he/it gave you? I know the answer.. i'm sure to read... THERES PROOF, ITS UNDENIABLE! There are a lot of strange things that happen in this world, some call them miracles, others dumb luck. I like to think that we, as a young human species are just too stupid to figure everything out yet... and maybe we wont figure everything out, but proof does not lie in the lack of a better answer. For me anyhow.

I agree with most of the things you said Dan, but not about humility. I was not actually implying that education makes people humble. It is humbling to realize that there is a vast amount that you do not know, but you can still easily believe that you know more than the next guy....

You know Edward, it's really funny how you disbelieve in God so much, yet you have to spend so much time convincing yourself that He doesn't exist.
As a wise man one said, it's takes more faith to believe in evolution than it does to believe in God.

EdwardC,
I would like to say something else. Do you claim to know everything there is to know on the face of this earth?
Get a piece of paper and a pen. You have two circles in front of you. One represents ALL the knowledge in the world (scientific knowledge, history, math, english, literature, what your neighbors and enemies know, EVERYTHING). Draw this circle giving it the size you would expect it to have.
Then we have the other circle. It represents the knowledge I would have, or you would have. Draw this circle with respect to the size you drew the world's knowledge.
Hopefully our individual circle ended up smaller.
Move this circle into the world's knowledge and you find that there is no way that you or I know EVERYTHING the world holds. How can you say that God doesn't exist without knowing everything?
And only if you know God could you understand why I know He exists. God has done things in my life that KARMA couldn't explain, that science can't explain, and mathematics cannot explain. I can't even explain some of the things in my life that have taken place, but I know there was a supernatural hand in them.
I will ask you to read a book. It is called A CASE FOR CHRIST by LEE STROBEL. Check it out.
That's all.
I hope you read my post as closely as I read yours. I'm praying for you.
