Education IS a humbling experience - it forces you to realize the finite limits of man's current knowlege BUT it drives us to expand those limits. School is but the begining of life long education. It is not SRTICTLY nessesary but like a good roadmap it makes things easier.. I agree with most of the things you said Dan, but not about humility. This myth is more prevalent among scholars themselves than it is among common people. However, there is a myth that increased knowledge brings greater humility. As Dan said, the reasoning goes like this. One who has learned many things knows better how much there is to know and therefore understands his ignorance more than those less knowledgeable. This learning humbles him. As with many lies, this myth has a little truth in it. Increased knowledge does reveal better the vastness of truth and brings certain awe to the scholar. However, it does not keep him from comparing himself with others less knowledgeable and feeling superior to them. Knowledge tends to puffs up its possessor with pride. “How could they be so dumb! That's such an easy thing to know.” I have seen this happen many times. *cough* EdC *cough*

I was just saying that most organized religion tells people that they have to do the things mentioned to go to heaven. People can live good lives without religion. What I was trying to say is why not live good lives just in case there is a God and then you will be rewarded after this life. If there indeed is no God then you will make your life and others life here on Earth more enjoyable.

It's funny because I caught the meaning in the Crazy Chicken's reply without having it explained to me.
Maybe some of you are simply trying too hard to be singled out or offended.

Ahhh...Pascal's wager...Unfortunately, it doesn't work with a God who requires real faith. Believe in God because he IS, not be cause he MIGHT BE.
