-PeteFWIW, $400 for a one of the best 3mp cameras is still pretty cheap. There are good 2MP cameras for aboutthat much still.
If you can afford to wait a couple weeks, check out some of the hot deals sites. You never know when you can pick up a Nikon 995 for $250 which I have seen before. Dell & Gateway often have awesome coupons and obviously are great companies to buy from.
