Blah blah blah blah...peoples beliefs are just that...they cannot be forced upon anybody. I don't agree that it should be banned from schools etc, but I do agree that if you don't want to say it, don't.

Getting suspended from school for just that is absolutely rediculous!!

I do believe that this topic has struck a nerve that will always be affected for as long as we live.

My personal belief goes along the line that our forefathers based this country on the beliefs of "One Nation, Under God". They left Europe and such and came here to escape religeous prosecution, and from having to believe a certain faith. However, I do NOT believe that they would have wanted to do what they did if they, would/had seen what is happening today. We have people that no longer believe in any god what-so-ever, and take offense at our currency stating "In God We Trust". If there is no such thing as God or god, however you want it stated, what is our country for? Before any of you would ever go to court and have to sit in the witness stand, you take an oath which has the following if I remember correct, "Do you promise to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help you god?" The witness now has his hand on the Holy Bible, and says "I Do". Now if this is just a person who does not at all believe in the any god, or the bible, what good is that oath done? Nothing, he could lie all s/he wants to, and it wouldn't phase him/her in the least. Therefore if we are doing all this just because it is offensive to some people, is our whole judicial system wrong? Is putting people under oath wrong? Is it "offensive"? Freedom of religion means you can worship your god without being prosecuted, but it DOES NOT mean you can just not believe in NOTHING, and then get mad at what the country was founded in.

Sorry to vent, this is just my belief, I know it's not stated in the best of ways, but I just hope you can get my drift. And o, soo sorry if I "offended" any of you non-believers out there.

Short of sticking my fingers in my ear at work (I work for a news station), there is no way for me NOT to hear about this. It boils down to ONE man and his quest for 5 minutes of fame and an ACLU, who, after the Sept. 11 attacks, hasn't had much to do. I agree with the beginning posters..what is the next thing to go??

Nuclear Madd, I think you've summarized pretty well what a lot of people have posted.

You bring up a good point, though, about swearing in atheists on the witness stand. The "swearing in" statement was written back when "swearing to God" meant something to people (even criminals). At the same time, though, witnesses are told that they will be held in contempt if they don't tell thee truth, so I guess we still have all the bases covered.

I think at some point soon we're going to have to start considering mentions of God on currency, documents, etc. in a historical context.

I don't think atheists should have a problem recognizing that America was founded by individuals whose concepts of freedom were shaped by the religion of the time. Facts are facts; we don't have to like them. wink

I have nothing but contempt for the ACLU. I am hoping that Jay Sekulow and the ACLJ (The nemesis of ACLU) step in and get this thrown out...

There should be a fine for this stupid crap in court...Quit clogging the system with your pathetic whining...

JaTo said it best.

And I agree 100% with what Bassen said: If you don't like the way we do things, feel free to leave.

History is full of accounts of where the US has used military intervention against countries that had been ruled by viciously oppressive governments. If saluting the flag were made mandatory in this country, would not our government then be guilty of oppression?
I HAVE RESPECT for the flag. I would NEVER EVER spit on it, or burn it, or wear it in the design of a tacky piece of clothing.
But, I believe just as firmly that my allegiance belongs to the Almighty God and his Son, Jesus Christ. For that reason, I will not salute the flag or say the "pledge of allegiance."
Because a person does not salute the flag or say the pledge of allegiance, does not automatically mean that they are a bad citizen with hatred for this country.

(this is just my .02 on this issue...and I respect the opinions voiced on all sides of it..)
