I did my research......Consumer Reports doesn't lie. It is hard core facts from many owners, not just one person who had a good experience. Don't make me out to be an idiot. Honda owner does NOT equal moron. mad

Dan,
They also rate contours like $hit and some people on here have had very reilable ones.

Our 92 SHO (MTX) was a great car, doesn't handle on rails but showed up a lot of stuff in it's day. I was looking at 2nd gen SHO's when I got my 'tour but couldn't find a decent MTX one. The ATX ones pretty much do blow. My friend has a 94 and it's a mess.

I wouldn't hesitate to get a 2nd gen MTX, especially if you don't mind doing some of the work, any car that age needs, yourself.

HTH,
-Pete

Yeah, don't believe everything you read on Consumer Reports.. I've known quite a few SHO owners who haven't had any problems before 100k, not to mention the one in our family, which we've had for 7 years now, and has been driven on a daily basis.. Had an extended warranty for 6/60K, and never once used it.

Same token, my SVT (which Consumer Reports didn't rate so hot) never left me stranded, just had alot of annoying recalls, and a variety of small things that needed to be fix, but never something fatal.

Yes, the brakes on the SHO are horrible. But you can retrofit a 3rd gen SHO brakes and you're good. Handling is boaty compared to the SVT, but some struts and springs make up for it. The torque is just amazing, and the engine is bulletproof. Not to mention all the luxury gizmos and nice leather. All in all, a super car.

Like I said...not everyone has problems but when it indicates that many people do, your chances of it occurring will be higher.

And yes, the Contour is rated like ****. I wasn't the one who bought the car, and unfortunately it was the first year for it so there was no reliability data.

Everywhere you go you'll have people with great ownership experiences, and others with poor ones. It's the proportion that makes a difference if you're concerned with reliability.

My SVT has been a POS from the start, with everything breaking on it time and time again, despite my efforts at maintaining it well. Yet I am still an enthusiast. I'm realistic though, it's costing me a lot of money!

You have to agree that chances of getting a 5hitty SHO are much higher than chances of getting a 5hitty Corolla. Doesn't mean you should'n buy one, but it might not be an economical proposition.

The guy that sold me my SVT did it for monetary reasons. He leased himself a brand spankin new 4 banger GM, hated it for 2 years, but got himself out of debt because of the low payments. He's now gotten rid of it and is moving back into a car that he can love, now that he truly can afford it. There's not a day he doesn't miss his SVT, but I think he's very satisfied of his current monetary situation. He can get all the SVTs he wants now, without the financial burden of large debt.

Just my .02$ I'd trade the SVT and get something VERY affordable. Sacrifice a little for a year or two won't kill you. Get yourself an SVT Contour afterwards. Or an SHO. Or a Cobra. Or a BMW. But be debt free!

If you're serious about getting one, just make sure the car has been taken care of. There are quite a few in the "SHO Trader" section on www.shoforum.com..

If there are any questions, just go ahead and post them over. Everyone over there are pretty nice guys...

Good luck!

Ryan
