1. Number of physicians in the US: 700,000

2. Accidental deaths caused by physicians per year: 120,000

3. Accidental deaths per physician: 0.171 (U. S. Dept. of Health and Human Services)

4. Number of gun owners in the US: 80,000,000

5. Number of accidental gun deaths per year (all age groups): 1,500

6. Accidental deaths per gun owner: 0.0000188

7. Statistically, physicians are approximately 9,000 times more dangerous than gun owners.

Fact: Not everyone has a gun, but just about everyone has a physician.

Therefore: Please alert your friends to this alarming threat. We must ban physicians before this gets out of hand. As a Public Health measure I have withheld the statistics on Lawyers for fear that the shock could cause people to seek medical aid

How about non-accidental gun deaths vs non-accidental physician deaths?

I bet more people get sick and die in a hospital than are shot and killed.

Don't road going motor vehicles kill about 50K / year. You don't hear the ban handgun crowd screaming about banning cars.

If they were really all about safety, they would work from the biggest killers down. Not starting at the relatively small numbers who are killed by a hand gun.

Its about irrational fear, not safety.

How do they propose to inforce any handgun ban on those who are already determined to break the law.

Stronger inforcement of current laws will do a lot more than adding more laws to the pile that already cannot be inforced.

Just a little fact, hijacked airplanes killed more people in the US, than did gun accidents.

Therefore, we should ban:

a) Jetliners
b) Large Buildings
c) Terrorists

Hope this helps. Not to mention, it demonstrates that you don't need a gun to kill large numbers of people.

One more thing, here are the CDC numbers for 1999 regarding external injury cause of death in the US.

The safety police have bigger things to worry about than firearms.

I can't let go, even more statistics:

http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/guns.htm

The intersting one is this:
Quote:

Offenders

According to the 1997 Survey of State Prison Inmates, among those possessing a gun, the source of the gun was from
- a flea market or gun show for fewer than 2%
- a retail store or pawnshop for about 12%
- family, friends, a street buy, or an illegal source for 80%
So I guess we need to go after family, friends, street seller and other illegal sources of gun instead of gun stores, since it appears the majority of the guns found on criminals come from these sources.
