and why would it get locked?? we mod chip our cars, so why can't we do the same to our PS2 smile [/b]
Because mod-chipping a car is not illegal. It will void your warranty, but it is legal. Chipping a PS2 with the intent to play burned (ie illegal copies) of software and DVD titles is not. Quite a difference.

That being said, more power too you if you can find a way to do it! laugh

These mod chips are also used to play non US titles on the PS2. They have a very legitimate reason for being used.

The XBox has alos been cracked, I have heard there are chips available (or soon to be) and people are now burning games on CD and DVD depending on the amount of data.

i did some research in the "boot disk" from what i've read, there is one for the PS1, but not the PS2, the ones on the internet, Kazza, Grokster, etc.. are bogus, or are ones that have to be used with a chip.
there is no bootdisk that work by itself

Does the PS2 run off a PROM or EPROM ??

If so, then there might be some way to reflash it. I don't have a PS2 so I'm guessing here and probably not helping the thread at all. Sorry.

Thats a good legal question. Is it illegal to render your PS2 capable of playing illegal (copied) discs ?? What law are you breaking ??

Anyway, good luck if you can do it. !!

Wouldn't it only be software piracy if you actually copied the game? Making your system able to read the disc doesn't mean you have copied any games!

I'm an idiot. I read this whole thing and just now realized we're talking about the PS2, not PS1. I retract my statement laugh

Isn't it legal to make backups of software and CD's that you already own? Wouldn't that include PS2 games? For instance, if you wanted to play the copied game so your original wouldn't get scratched up. Or something like that. wink

It is completely legal to make a thousand copies of software/CD/DVDs you own. However, if you start to give them to people or whatever, it becomes illegal.

Burning PS2 games requires a rather expensive (compared to CD-R) DVD-RAM disc and the drive to do it. So the mod chip would simply be nice so you can play import games.
