Astronomy... biggest hobby (hence the nick)...I have an ETX, and an 8" SCT.

D Davis, you must suck since the skies out there must be AWESOME! I envy you!

EdwardC, don't you live in Louisville? That is where I am from orignally... are you in LAS by chance? I was President for 3 years (on the board for 7), but had to give it up when I moved. I bet you spend a lot of time at the Falls of the Ohio then looking for trilo's... I have a friend who works there and is also a HUGE astronomy buff. If you are not in LAS, you should get into it... great group. You should also go to the Patoka Lake star party on the 13th, so I can actually check out an SVT laugh (not many around here frown )

Other hobbies: Photography, and computers smile

Yep, I do all sorts of astrophotography, including prime focus (which is you are talking about, shooting through the scope, using it like a gigantic lens... 2000 mm in my case laugh )

Hey n2_space,

Unfortunately, I have moved out of Louisville and now live in the suburbs of DC. I have visited the Falls of Ohio many times during my stay there. It is my favorite place to go fossil scrounging. I did not have much time though since I was completing my postdoc at U of L.

It's cool when rookies with their new Nikon F5's see me under my black focusing cloth working with my 4x5 and ask if it's an antique. When I show them that's it's a current camera with a 150mm multicoated Nikkor, they get very confused....
4x5. That was my most difficult photo class in college. Ever heard of the zone system? Light meter batteries die when talk of it comes up. laugh I love my Pentax K1000. Fully manual is the only way. I'd really like to invest in a Rolli some day. Hopefully I'll have a house soon so I can build a dark room and get back into B&W. I use a Sony Mavica for my digitals.

Yes, the Zone System is a pain to understand, and I think has far less relevance with today's thin-emulsion, short-toed films. I usually just take a few spotmeter readings with my Minolta Autometer, including the highlight and shadow areas, throw in some Kentucky Windage, and bracket like crazy. I don't think you can achieve the same effects in the darkroom developing modern films (the +1, -1 stuff) that you could in the old days. If you read Ansel Adams' books, he commented often about how difficult it was to print many of his early negatives because the exposures or contrast ranges were way off, leading to blocked highlights or empty shadow areas. I think that's why he became such a fanatic about the Zone System (more so than Minor White, even). And yes, try medium format if you can, you'll be amazed at the increase in quality over 35mm, especially using T-MAX 100 film (if you're a b&w junkie). Sorry to wander so far off topic, but there you are....

The camera used for the pics currently on my Nippy page were taken by my mom's Sony Mavica something-or-other. I don't like that camera. It's the one that takes floppy disks, so the quality suffers. They only look that sharp because of me resizing them.

Personally, I use (for digital) a Canon A40. I have all the lenses for it (24mm, ~250mm, close up lens) as well as the waterproof case, which will be cool once I begin scuba diving. smile I need to make a photography webpage . . . wink

Oh, and regarding the disposable, I have the honor of being able to say I have never bought a disposable for myself! laugh
