Yesterday my Dad drove up from his beach house so we could transplant a tree from my yard to his.
Well after we moved the tree and we were driving me back home we encountered a horrific scene.
It seems as though a 1997 Suburban burst into flames while doing about 70 on the highway.
The driver lost all control of the truck and slammed nose first into a 5 foot ditch.
My Dad and I were the 5th car to arrive on the scene.
The truck was carrying a family of two adults and three kids.

People had already helped the mother and father out of the car.
My Dad and I helped to pull one of the kids out before the first explosion.
Three individuals, including my Dad, tried to contain the fire with extinguishers, but couldn't.
When the second explosion happened we had to back off.
By this time the entire truck was engulfed in flames.

The Mom of the family, who was unconscious, was dragged away from the blaze,
and the Dad, who was in shock, had to be restrained.
The only child rescued from the inferno, age 12, was also unconscious.
The flames were just too hot and it was just too dangerous.
We couldn't get to the other two kids, age 8 and 12, that were trapped in the truck.
We never heard any cries or screams so we just hoped they were already gone before they burned.

The Mom Dad, and surviving child all are in critical condition.
They have 2nd & 3rd degree burns over most of their bodies.

When police, fire, and ambulance arrived we watched as they put the fire out.
Gave our statements to the police and got checked out by paramedics.
Needless to say we didn't talk at all the last hour of our trip.
I cried most of the night and didn't sleep.
I was afraid of the nightmares.
Sorry if my typing is a bit off,
but I'm having a hard time concentrating today.

oh my gosh, I feel for you, that's one of those things that you hope you never have to encounter. At least you know that you did what you could...and certainly helped out, saved a life if not more. Once the shock goes away that's how I would think about it. Good Luck.

This is tragic.

This is the sort of thing the inertia fuel cutoff switch is designed to prevent. All Fords since sometime in the 80s (my 88 Mustang GT has one) are equipped with one. It cuts power to the fuel pump in the event of a collision to prevent a fire from fuel spraying everywhere in the engine compartment.

Does the '96 Suburban have one? Anyone know?

If these aren't required by law, Ford should be commended for their decision to install them!

I've seen old videos of the Mustangs that had the bad fuel tanks. They got rear ended and you could literally see the entire cabin get saturated with fuel! eek

The Pinto maybe?

I think it had something to do with the location of the fuel tank and the rear axle. Not sure of the details.

That's awful. I've seen plenty of wrecks in my time as a truck driver but never any that bad. frown

I once saw a nasty wreck when I was driving the Dew Truck back in NM. I was driving through a construction zone on I-10 (one lane each direction on one side of the bridge) and saw a Honda Gold Wing with 2 riders and a trailer going the other way swerve to avoid the concrete barrier. I guess the trailer snapped back because I glanced in my rearview and to my horror I saw them flipping over. Once I cleared the bridge I immediately pulled over and called 911. Traffic was already coming to a stand still (one lane bridge, no way around). I contacted 911 and gave them the general location (which was about 20 miles from any hospital. I continued on and finally saw 2 NM State Police cruisers, one Luna County Sherrif's cruiser and an Ambulance high tailing it towards the accident. I later talked with a friend who was a nurse at the hospital they were taken to (Deming, NM) and she said they were DOA. frown

That is horrible. A good friend of mine was in a car accident in which his fiancee was beheaded. It messed him up, probably permanently, it is a horrible thing to see family members get killed. I hope I never have to experience somehting like that. I applaud your courageousness at the scene.
