Asteroid passes within 75,000 miles of the Earth The chilling aspect is that the potential bolide was only detected days after its perigee (point of closest Earth approach). If it had struck anywhere near the Indian subcontinent, both India and Pakistan would have unleased their nuclear arsenals thinking that it was a first strike from the opposing country.

Revelation 8
10The third angel sounded his trumpet, and a great star, blazing like a torch, fell from the sky on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water-- 11the name of the star is Wormwood.[1] A third of the waters turned bitter, and many people died from the waters that had become bitter. 12The fourth angel sounded his trumpet, and a third of the sun was struck, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third of them turned dark. A third of the day was without light, and also a third of the night.
Footnotes
8:11 That is, Bitterness

You're absolutely right Antonio,
The NEO is woefully understaffed. It is hard to believe that the search for near earth objects is so low on the priority list. I guarantee that if an impact had occurred, priorities would change very quickly after that point.

If history has taught anything, it would be that being proactive towards threats prevents them. Being reactive merely helps clean up the mess afterwards.

Yeah unfortunatley it looks like an impact would be the onyl thing to get people off their @$$es and looking towards the sky. It's a fact we're going to be hit again..it's merely a matter of time, and the sections of sky beign searched, are so small it's almost pointless. I think our governments shoudl act now on this before it's too late. The difference between us and the dinosaurs, or any other life form on this planet..is we have the ability to prevent this from happening again!

Say we do find something that can cause catastrophe coming at us. There is absolutely nothing we can do about it (sorry "Armageddon" fans). The only way is if we had around a decade to devise some form of interception. Even after that, though, I think we overestimate our ability to change the course of a very large celestial object.
