Originally posted by TheCiscoGuy: The World Cup, the World Cup. I am sick of hearing about the bloody World-fecking-Cup, and I live in America, where the only people who watch it are sports fanatics who will watch any sport, or pretentious twits who want to prove how worldly and cultured they are by partaking of a typically non-American pasttime. I imagine these people also arrogantly twist slices of lemon over salmon steaks while discussing the state of modern high art.
At any rate, it disgusts me how obnoxiously enthusiastic people get over things like this. Look, I'm all for getting excited about things, but come on. It's a damn game. A bunch of people chase a ball around (this is somehow much more refined and elegant than, say, American football, though nobody can provide a coherent reason why). And everyone bickers and argues and struts around while watching the games and comparing scores of this country versus that country, as though the spectators had anything to do with it, any personal responsibility or investment for the wins and defeats.
And when it's all said and done, what are we left with, really? One country gets to say "We chased the ball around better than anybody!"
..woo-hoo? You wanna talk anti-climatic? There you go, kids. Full of sound and fury, but signifying nothing.
It occurs to me that if we devoted even a tenth as much of our time and attention to, oh, say, something that actually mattered, the world could be a much better place.
Look, enjoy the sport, cheer your team on, do whatever. Have fun with it. Be entertained. I'm not saying it's a bad thing - not at all. All I'm sayin' is, it's just a damn game, people. Keep that in mind. All this post proves is how ignorant you are. I dslike American football but I realise that the majority of folks in the US live for it. Great. I don't come on here spouting about how much I dislike it. I'm neither a sports fanatic who will watch any sport (as I said, I dislike American football) nor am I a pretentious twit. I don't like salmon either FYI. It's actually disappointing to me that folks here don't get as enthusiastic about their teams but I doubt if you will understand that. Regards....

Oh, and why? just because football(soccer) is not an American pastime???? You have NO idea of what your talking about, the only ignorant and obnoxious people, are people like YOU!From the look of the Ciscoguys original post, he probably feels the same way about all sports, not just the world cup. I share some of his frustration. SOCCER gets very little coverage in the US because, in general, very few care. But at world cup time, all of the supposed fans start to pay attention. I will be glad to see if the US wins, but if they don't, I won't be heartbroken by any means. I'm a huge sports fan and this time of year is dissappointing because the only thing on TV is baseball. Being a Tigers fan doesn't give me anything compelling to watch. Which leaves me with Golf and Soccer right now. I think I may even prefer golf... I think the biggest problem I have found is that despite the players moving very quickly/sprinting a majority of the time, the field is so large that it seems they are moving in slow motion, which is the main complaint of most americans. About the World series comment...I suppose that if it weren't for immigration, the Dominican Republic may be able to field a team or two, that could be above average on MLB. No other country's all star teams could win the world series. BTW, weren't the current rules used in world cup soccer based on the USA's original football (soccer) rules? I know the origins of the game itself date back to Egypt, but I believe the soccer/futbal we know today is based on american rules. It's about time we take back OUR sport. I read this recently, but I don't have the article or the backup to prove anything, so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. One other comment is that if the US sports fans think they are the biggest sports fans, I would probably disagree. People rarely ever die here because they root for the wrong team, or disagree with a call on the field. It seems to be almost common place around the soccer world. Or in the case of one of Italy's club teams, their number 1 scorer was fired because he kicked the winning goal for the Korean soccer team against Italy.

Very hard luck to the US...what a game !
This was the first US game I've caught this WC (at work for the others) and I am amazed at the difference in skill between now and '98. Kahn kept Germany in it, that was the only difference I could see.
No one will take the US for granted from now on.

Also, thanks for being open minded.

Also, thanks for being open minded. [/b]3 Russians....They were mostly Canadian. Actually, I take that back. A majority of the DRW were US citizens.
