I think I can see why they'd want to do this. Basically, if you get a bunch of government agencies buying from one Home Depot, and they buy a crapload of stuff, there goes your stock of supplies! But in the same sense, why WOULDN'T you want this to happen? I think every store, especially in the times we're in now, DREAMS of the stuff flying off the shelves instead of collecting dust.
Hey, there's always Lowe's around here. Never had a problem there.

Home Depot sucks!!! Go to Lowe's! Home Depot should welcome Government business. Money is money! With the economic situation the way it is, Home Depot should be happy that they have the Government to make large purchases to support them. And as Kim said they are NOT a contractor/subcontractor, they are a retail establishment. Home Depot just supplies the merchandise. (EDIT) Should have clarified my comment "Home Depot sucks". This isn't because of the Government issue, but because I personally feel their stores (the ones I've been to)are terrible. No one knows what they're doing or you spend an outrageous amount of time in the store for just oa few items. I personally don't agree with their policy concerning the Government, but that's not why I said "Home Depot sucks." I just plain don't like their stores. Christine If you build it (Lowes's) they will come

I will continue to buy from them, Lowe's, Ace or whoever has the best prices. HD and Lowes normally have substantially lower prices on items than Ace, but ace is only a few blocks away.

Maybe they want to get paid....every try to get money out of a big corporation or business? They take their sweet @$$ time paying their bills...leaving you to carry the balance. Not good for the little guy.

Washington Post Story for more information. It sounds like HD has had a long standing policy, but after the St. Louis Post-Dispatch read a copy of the memo, the 'fit hit the shan'. HD is just trying to not be labeled a government contractor so they won't have to do additional accounting or employment related disclosures. Something else to consider is that there are many instances of government credit card fraud. Federal, State and Local workers buying personal stuff on government issued credit cards.
I think you are anti-American if you think HD should be forced to sell to the government.
This is a private business, that should have the freedom to sell or not sell to whomever they wish.
Instead of laws dictating to whom they must sell, let the marketplace decide.
I think more companies should refuse to sell to the government, then maybe they will stop wasting so much of my hard earned money that is taxed away for whatever silly problem the government feels obligated to manage (they never actually solve any, just manage them.)
Rant Off

They are good at running people out of stores. I read a story a little while back that they won't sell to people who work for Lowes or ACE or any other store. Some guy had a jacket on that he WON somewhere else and was escorted out. They think everyone is a snoop. GET OVER IT! Geeezzz.... I can understand, but I think they take things too far. That's ok though, Lowes, Menards, and ACE are all closer to me anyway
