Found some info about upgrading from various OS's to XP, but not much about specifically going from ME to XP. Anyone complete this upgrade, and what should I look out for? Also, should I even bother, since I'm one of the few people that doesn't have any (well, many) issues with ME?

I've done the upgrade from 9x to 2000 on a few computers, and it's pretty slick. It will run a compatibility check on the programs and hardware you're running and tell you what will and won't work. You can also uninstall it and revert back to ME if you want.
The only thing is make sure you have a few gigs free on your os drive. 2000/XP is far and away better than ME (which is pure ass).

well, I went from 98se to XP and the only real issue I've had, is that my network connection will go away randomly, even though XP doesn't realize it has, and it can only be fixed by a reboot. I'm guessing its hardware related.
It's all about balance.

I'm guessing its hardware related. You may want to look into irq settings in the bios, you might be able to force an irq onto the pci slot your network card is in. Also you might want to try updating drivers for all your pci devices including the network card. I've had a problem with some Dell's we got here at work wouldn't work properly out of the box, but updating the nic and sound card drivers resolved that issue (sometimes the sound card wouldn't work, sometimes the network card works, sometimes they both work). Just a thought, or if that doesn't work I'd try switching the network card around to another available pci slots, depending on what slot it is in, they might share an irq with an adjacent slot (or an agp or isa slot).

I just did the upgrade myself to my father computer. All I did was reformat the whole hard drive and I added another drive for other reasons. The whole install took less then an hour and his celeron is running like a charm.

ME -> DOS is an upgrade. That is the worst operating system Microsoft has put out. It shouldn't give you any issues though. Oh, and about the network thing, I always fixed it by disabling and re-enabling the network connection. I know of a few other people that had this problem. It seems to pop up in the 'corporate' edition EDIT: my system automagically stopped doing it back in february.

I went from XP Home to XP Pro and haven't had any problems. Actually I think there are only two issues with upgrading your current OS to XP: 1) Go with at least 256mb ram for XP and of course the required disk space for installation. 2) Be prepared for driver hunts. If you'd like to re-use any peripherals, network cards, etc currently attached to your pc make sure you have the drivers for XP before you upgrade. It took me damn near a month to find XP drivers that work with a Voodoo 5 card plus I had to get a new printer because the manufacturer of my old printer wasn't releasing drivers for that old model on XP.

note to self: next time talk about reading a technet article about nic incompatibilities or something.....
