Kerry has some real good suggestions! What I want to add is:
1. DON'T Address your letter to "Dear Human Resources"! GET A NAME. If you can't find one on the WEB simply try calling the Company and asking the operator for the name of the Human Resources Manager. I would actually go one better and get the name of the person you would be reporting to and send your resume directly to him/her.

2. If you have some college in your background there is no need to state that you have a High School Diploma (it's somewhat redundant).
