if your joining the corps having a wacked out sleep schedule might not be a bad idea, just sleep when u can, believe me it's much better that the hell of USMC boot doesnt hit you because your used to 10 hours of sleep from midnight to 10am...... if you and your body can deal with irradic sleep (like me) it will help a lot, according to my little bro (been in for a year now, he sleeps like me, whenever its convenient)

if your having problems in general with just not being able to sleep, etc... try drinking water all the time, stop with soda and coffee (its not that hard) and dont eat so much ****ty food, more salads and less mickey d's... I found that cleaning up my diet kept me both from worrying and losing sleep... but it could just be me..
Good Luck eh!

That might explain some of it. I eat pretty good (no fast food... can't afford it) and I hate drinking sodas. But I've been drinking them at night this past week to stay awake at work. I bet that has a lot to do with it...

I made a thread a few weeks ago about energy foods to keep me awake at work at night and I think all that was said was Power Bars and fruits/vegetables. Coke works so well, though. wink But I really do detest drinking that crap.

Maybe I won't go to work tonite and just catch up. I really should, though...

I've studied sleep a little bit and here's what I have to add:

Kathryn is right, taking a nap of more than an hour and a half will totally screw any kind of "normal sleep pattern". Sleeping 3-4 hours will get you into a split-shift sleep cycle, which it kinda seems like you're doing, except the other shift is so short. When you split your sleep, you're always groggy.

Don't take any pills/herbs to help you sleep. They are not good for you at all.

I think the reason you're not sleeping normally is stress. Seems like you have a lot going on, and some issues to resolve. Thinking about those and letting them worry you will prevent you from sleeping.

A couple suggestions to help you sleep -- Lay on your back, and focus on your breathing. Try not to roll on your side or stomach, because you'll feel your heart beat easier. Your heart beat often acts as a gauge for stress -- certain thoughts will cause your heart rate to increase, and if you are aware of that, you will be more affected by the thoughts. Also, don't lay in bed for more than 30 minutes at a time when trying to sleep. Get up and walk around once in a while. And finally, I agree with the others that said that exercise and diet are essential to sleep. Of course if you eat a salad for dinner you won't get 8 solid hours right away. But better health equals better sleep.

If all else fails, just go a night/day without sleeping. You will be so exhausted that your body will fall asleep on its own. Then you'll get a full night's rest, and when you're fully rested you're less affected cognitively by stress.

I hope this helps some.

It does. Only...

When I sleep for 3-4 hours, I'm not napping. I'm trying to sleep for a full eight, but I can't. I wake up after four hours and cannot fall back asleep. So I end up being awake for a few hours, then sleeping for a few hours more, if I can.

I think it's a mix of recent stress and drinking Coke on a regular basis the past week. I never drink that stuff and now I've ingested 20 oz. a night at regular intervals for four nights now. I need to relax and find a better way to stay awake at work at night.

I'm taking tonite off and I'll probably go to bed around ten or eleven when I'm getting really tired. Hopefully I'll be able to recover and start over tomorrow night.

You guys are neato. smile

I never have a problem sleeping and I enjoy working nights so maybe we should trade places for awhile :p

anywho, I have found that having some good white noise (I have a air cleaner) helps to soften things out.

If I smoke a little whacky tobacky (or a lot) it mellows me out too laugh

I think the herbal remedy will work best, (it will also make you have crazy dreams!) It can be found at any local street pharmacy.

Mushu's pretty cool too!
