Uh, I'm still using my Sony 353D reel-to-reel deck and it's not "ancient"--Tandberg wire recorders are ancient (you do remember them, right?) BTW, there were various reel sizes: 3 1/2 inch, 5 inch, 7 inch (what I mainly use)...and a larger "professional" size. You get pretty good sonic quality from a reel-to-reel at 7 1/2 inches per second tape speed (cassettes, by contrast, move at only 1 7/8 inches per second, thus requiring Dolby, chrome tape, and either serious deafness or serious delusion (or a serious substance abuse problem) on the part of the owners to make them feel that cassettes sound good).[/b]My parents (well Mom since dad moved out) have a old reel to reel tape player. They've had it as long as I remember. It's as least as old as I am maybe even older.
