As a cop, do you know what happens if you run with your lights on? All the drivers in front of you start to slow down, and drive unpredictably.

If a cruiser is behind you with the lights off, then you aren't usually stepping on the brakes and looking for a place to pull over. Once the lights go on you sure do...

So it makes sense to wait until there is a chance to pass, turn on the lights, pass and get into the lane. And accelerate away.

Heck, most of the time I'm just glad the copper has passed me and I can go about my business without worrying if I'm over the limit by 10kph.

I think a remedy for all this whining about police is a little seat time on a ridealong. Its an eyeopening perspective on police work. If you have a chance sometime, go for it.
