Mac's are definately great. I've had my share of them, and I still have my 500mhz iMac.
My last job I was working as an apple certified tech. Sure, we saw lots of broken machines (why would someone bring in a working one, right?), but the majority of the problems were software. Either someone moving system componets around or trying to use dated software on the latest and greatest.
As for the quality of the machines, for personal use, you can't beat a mac. Sure, they a cost a bit more than the cheapo mom & pop pc that is outdated by the time you get it home, but the os is definately more powerful and much more stable.

Qaz> OS 7.5.3 isn't too bad, but I'd also grab the 7.5.5 update. A couple minor bugs were fixed.
