Okay I've read all the past posts on this subject and know how to do it but I need someone to set me straight. Is the B&M shifter linkage an improvement over the stock? Or is it just the shortening of the throw? Anyone?

Night and day better...

Second best Mod I did and I started with the SVT's shorter shifter already... Can't imagine the improvement over the stock one...

Fits all 98.5-00 MTX-75 with little or no modification.

98's need to shim the reverse lockout and may need other trimming work...

Will not work with older rod actuated shifters (95-97)

The geometry of the B&M is way better than if you just cut the stock one down. Sure the cut down is cheaper, but then again, you have to buy a shift knob with a set scrw in order to do it. Save you money and get the B&M....

I didn't have to shave down anything in my car, fits like a glove. Just replace the knob before risking major hand damage from sun.

I didn't need any adjustments in mine, but I installed one in a friends 2000 SVT, and had to shave the reverse lockout. I think it's hit or miss with that thing.

Excellent mod none the less...

I cut both my and silversvtE1's shifter by 2.25". Feels nice and quick, and I got rid of the reverse lockout in the process.
I love it and it saved me the ridiculous $160 B&M are asking for their shifter!

What I want to know is does the B&M improve the shifting outside of the fact that it is shorter? Or is it just the fact that it is short.

These are the facts. The B&M is a shorter shifter, it does not change the fulcrum of the shifter, it's just a shorter shaft with a really nice aluminum lockout. The entire design is straight, with the B&M being designed for the Focus, with the Contour/Cougar getting lucky. This is how it is a short shifter.

The stock shifter is angled, the lockout is angled. Cutting down the stock piece will give you the exact same effect. If you're ambitious, you can cut down the stock shifter, and the lockout, glue the lockout back together, and have the shorter shifter without the price. Or you can leave the lockout, out. Oh, you will loose the threads when you cut down the stocker, but get a MOMO and you'll be fine. Or rethread the stock shaft.

Boy are you off...

The fulcrum point is different. The angle of the shafts is different. The lengths and angle of the ball stud attachment piece is different...

It's nothing like cutting the stock piece at all...

Were did you get this bad info from?

I've looked at them side by side personally!
