It would be a much better movie if they didn't change the damn plot. They books are always better where Tom Clancy is concerned. And you guys are right about the Backfires being a little too close. The ASM (Air/Surface Missile) Kitchen missiles they carry mut travel at least 2 miles before arming anyway, so they would have punched big holes in the carrier and that's it. On top of that, where the hell are the AEGIS destroyers and cruisers which are supposed to be protecting against air threats. There's always one AEGIS type vessel no further than 5 miles out from the carrier anyway. If it doesn't kill the incoming missiles, then it will take the hits for the targetd vessel, in this case a carrier. Oh well, I guess being in the Navy I know certain things about fleet deployment strategy that other people just can't possibly know, including the director of Sum of All Fears.
