I'd like to know who the idiot was that voted too much, obviously someone who doesn't have to live at the poverty level on military pay.
Something that most forget- there is no such thing as "overtime" in the military. You stay until the job is done, even if that means that you only get 4 hrs sleep before your next shift starts, and you don't get paid any more when you do this. They do, however, take away your pay if you refuse. Considering that you are already being paid below minimum wage (lower enlisted), this is a fuxoring joke. They need to about double enlisted pay to even start to catch up to where it should be. I know, I've been in for 12, will stay for at least 20.

For full time active duty troops don't make nearly enough. As for me (reserves) I feel as though I make enough. (0-3) Cops, paramedics, teachers, firefighters, armed forces, and nurses should all be making more than they do. The only thing that low pay does help to guarantee, is that the people who do the jobs do care about the job and take it seriously. They're not in it for the money.

I think active duty people get paid a fair amount.
I too lived on Ft. Wood and the Army homes are fine, spacious, and quality in construction.
Things people in the military do not think about while thye are in: Your electricity, water, sewer, and garbage is paid for. All repairs are done free of charge on where you live. You recieve a food allowance of roughly $250 per month. Not to mention you don't pay rent.
You are able to shop on the cheap at the Commisary and PX/BX, your family is provided with no deductible medical and dental. IMHO some of the best medical care is given to Active soldiers.
You are given an allowance every year to buy new unifroms to go to work in. Haricuts cost $5. Gas on the Post is much cheaper than the Shell station.
These are all things you have that us in the civilian world do not. Do not complain about not being able to support a wife and family as those are your responsibilities. You married and had kids so its up to you to afford them. Marines have a policy where every soldier who enters must be single, correct?
As for being on call 24/7, You are correct but it is the exception to work past 6pm while on regular duty. Don't forget all those Govt. 4-day weekends either.
My point is I think you guys get paid fine! Must look at all the perks and not just the base pay.

I sincerely believe the pay charts need to be increased for the men and women serving our country, especially those that are looking to be career military personnel (separate pay scales?). However, I believe there is enough waste and bureaucracy throwing money away that the Pentagon should be able to do this without additional tax money.

All repairs are done free of charge on where you live. -only five months after reporting the fact, and now there are three things wrong instead of one!!
You recieve a food allowance of roughly $250 per month. -the exact amount to eat at the chow hall every month to be exact..
You are able to shop on the cheap at the Commisary and PX/BX, your family is provided with no deductible medical and dental. -true
IMHO some of the best medical care is given to Active soldiers. -eeehh, thats iffy, depends on the student, which most of em are..
You are given an allowance every year to buy new unifroms to go to work in. -try being a Marine then we will see how far that goes..go to cpls course in the USMC it might make it to last inspection..
Haricuts cost $5. -only for a lousy one. about $7 for a good one, and as a good Marine NCO, you need one twice a week usually.
Gas on the Post is much cheaper than the Shell station. -nope, its the same, come to lejeune, then you will know.
Marines have a policy where every soldier who enters must be single, correct?
-No, 1) we are troops, army has soldiers... 2) you dont have to be single to join the corps.
So you see, you have to look at every angle, yes it isnt hard at eveything, however for what we do and for what our civilian equivalent does.. it rarely ever matches up or even comes close... I have a newspaper article on such a matter that I think all of you might think interesting.. Marine Corps times.. D Davis, you might have seen it..

Wow, FMR12B, I see so many "I saw it this way so that's how it must be" overtones in your post I can't come up with the energy to dispute them all. Glad Ft. Wood has nice Army homes. Check out the ones on Camp Pendleton in the Wire Mountain II housing division. Wonder if they've been officially condemned yet... Best medical and dental? Um - okay  Allowance for uniform - yes. And it's handy. It isn't enough, but it's handy. Gas isn't always cheaper on the post. Also, I've compared many times and have proven that, without a doubt, the gas on the post isn't the same quality. Worse MPG. Translation - I burn more fuel so any cost benefit is nullified by the fact I'd have to buy more. These are all things you have that us in the civilian world do not. Do not complain about not being able to support a wife and family as those are your responsibilities. You married and had kids so its up to you to afford them. Marines have a policy where every soldier who enters must be single, correct? Wow! You're giving advice and you don't even fully know what you're talking about. Were you to use this condescending tone to me in person I'd break you in half I'll type more later. Your idiocy angers me too much to continue right now.
