When I graduated, I knew no-one in the industry. I just made a list of all the companies that were in my field, and wrote them letters with my resume attached. IIRC, the final # of companies contacted was about ~120, and that results in about 23 interviews and 3 jobs. I change employers twice in 3 months till I got to a place I liked and I've been here ever since.
