Millions of years ago, in a galaxy far away, there was a thing called the Federal Service Entrance Exam. If you passed, your application and those of others who passed were put on a register, and Federal agencies looking for people would review them, and if they were interested in you, THEY would send YOU a postcard setting up an interview. A very civilized system, if you ask me.

I just made a list of all the companies that were in my field, and wrote them letters with my resume attached. ditto...except i only sent out maybe a dozen resumes. i knew which area i wanted to live in, and i knew what size company and what type of work i wanted to do (i'm in architecture - and i ruled out hospital work and miscellaneous other sub-fields). went through a few trade publications and the phone book, picked out a few names, sent resumes w/ a sample portfolio sheet attached, and called 'em after a couple of weeks. got a few interviews and had a job offer after only 3-4 interviews. i also posted my resume on an online AIA site (specific to architecture, but point being - it was posted online for interested companies to look at) and got a few hits from that. hth.
