I probably sent out close to 1000 resumes in a 7 month period. (classifieds, job websites, employer websites, headhunter sites, etc) I also cold-called about 40 IT companies in my area, and attended 3 different job fairs. It didn't do much good. A buddy of mine that got laid off before me landed a job, and was able to finally get me one at the same company.

To give you an idea of what you're up against, they were hiring for 18 positions. 16 positions were filled from within the company, 1 was a former employee, and I was #18. And if I didn't know someone important in the company, another internal person would have gotten that position.

It's all about who you know. Like you, I had skills that were golden, and couldn't even get an interview. Quite a change from 3-4 years ago, when I had companies bidding against each other for me. (Not to mention the 50% pay cut I had to take)

I did generate alot of leads working with a head hunter. While he wasn't able to get me any work, we came close about 6 different times. Since he didn't get paid until I got paid, he definitely worked harder than anyone else.

Good luck.

Shaun G,

CDI (A contract agency) does alot of the high tech jobs in the Portland metro area.
They are pretty quick and effective.
When I was between full time jobs I went to CDI and was employed within a week.

Don't underestimate presentation.

You have to be assertive when you prepare a CV, fill out an application or go for an interview.

When I was out of work a few years ago, I spent a good deal of time rewriting my CV and learning about interview skills so that I would be prepared and relaxed when the "big moment" came.
I also sent out dozens of applications, but I always followed up with the person hiring. It shows that you have a real interest in working there and that you have some character and will speak up for yourself. Otherwise you may end up as another name in a pile of applications.

Alot of people treat job prospects as a lottery, when it is actually a competition. If you're not ready, only pure luck will get you the job.

Look at website postings in the evening after you've done your real search during the day.

Cold call. Visit companies in person. Don't just look at places that you think "fit your profile".
Make a list of places to visit and set some goals.
Most of all, don't sell yourself short. Blow you're own horn and feel good about it.

Be positive about your prospects and good luck in your search.

Two years ago that success was earned ... I guess the tides have have changed recently though.

Guess I should reconsider my advice ... I've been recommending the site to many people!!
