It is absolutely stunning to see all these responses saying to let someone else deal with the problem, i.e. the Police, anonymous neighbor, humane society, etc. Have we turned into a powerless society? confused Come on! Deal with it yourself like bkent is doing. Good job.

I dont see why your neighbor would even have a dog like that anyway,,,Why keep a dog that you have to keep caged 24/7. People like that piss me off,,,

Intsead of putting the dog down, he should take it to the humane society and let them deal with it,,as they know people who may have land and want one for protection or whatever...

My dad was playing with his cat & the cat bit him on the arm. OK no big deal right? Well my dad had the bite checked out & now his cat has a record! If he does it again he is a goner! (the kitty has all shots & is very well taken care of) We joke about it but I guess they take these things very seriously.
To me that is utterly ridiculous!!! If i play with a cat and get scratched or bitten, I absorb it and move on. Its funny how some people want pets but only the ones that dont bite or scratch.
Its pretty ignorant to expect cats to behave with human reason,,,How come they dont have a record for pet owners stupidity?

Update - He promised me he is getting rid of his dog ASAP, he said he'd rather find it a home but if it comes down to it he'll put him down.

My dog is going to the Vet today at 5:30 pm and he's picking up the bill.

I'm pretty sure that if I had shot his dog it would've turned much uglier as the cops would have come, he would have gone to jail, and my dog would have been labeled a people biter even given these extreme circumstances.

Given the situation I think it's going to turn out OK as his dog is going somewhere, my vet bills will be taken care of, and most importanly I'm not going to lose a good friend...

If this guys your buddy i wouldnt turn him in, **** happens man, especially with 4 year olds, no reason to be causin bad blood. however it does suck that it instantly attacked your dog. If it happens again, shoot his dog, plain and simple, 3 strikes and the *******s done.

I love my neighborhood, we have about 8 dogs, a few ****su's my lahsa, a sheep dog, some goldens and some labs, they all belong to people over 50 save for the sheep and mine, so they're all really tame dogs, they yap at eachother from time to time but no ones ever been bitten in our neighborhood, and when the dogs get up close they just sorta sniff eachother and act half scared.. its pretty amusing.

My dog had a similar experience.

She's a mut, or as we like to call her, a Chowbador laugh (lab, chow, husky mix)

She lived with a real *****y great dane for a while that used to try and intimidate her. She had none of that.

It was the craziest thing seeing my 40 lb mutt own that 120 giant...

The screwed up part is that is the only dog she has ever had a problem with and was always provoked into fighting.

I've never seen my dog start a fight, but I have seen her finish a few wink

Kharma is very real and she is one mean b!tch.

Sorry about your situation! frown

Have I missed it or has nobody sugested a muzzel?

That would be my first idea, keep it muzzled when let out.
But wait, you said it got out by mistake.......I guess that idea would not work after all! frown

I know I would be tempted to kill the dog too but I don't own a gun! wink

Lhasa's are great. My mom has one. It is cross eyed, has an underbite, and smells, but I love that thing to death

Sometimes it's not a good idea to take things into your own hands. If bkent had blasted that pit bull, he'd be in a worse scenario than he is now. The gun is for self defense purposes. Obviously if it came down to losing his dog, and he had to shoot the pit to get him off, you do what you have to.

Letting the cops or animal control deal with it is much safer/smarter. And they'll put the dog down if it comes down to it, I've got no problem with that.

The whole people biter status is true, my aunt, one time was messing with my old dog (dead now). Picking her up (lap dog) and stuff...it was raining and thundering bad outside...I warned her the dog gets nervous when it thunders but she didn't listen and put her down, so the dog got pissed and bit her nose. Numnuts went to the doctor and told them a dog bit her, they asked for info, she gave it, and we had people calling our house to let us know the dog was on record. Stupidity at it's finest. If you do have to go to a doctor over a bite, say it was a stray!
