Personally I think dogs like that are so unsafe. Could be you next time. My dad was playing with his cat & the cat bit him on the arm. OK no big deal right? Well my dad had the bite checked out & now his cat has a record! If he does it again he is a goner! (the kitty has all shots & is very well taken care of) We joke about it but I guess they take these things very seriously.
I would at the very least take your dog to the vet & that way there will be a record of that dog attacking. If it happens again the dog will most likely be put down.
I say buy you neighbor a nice shiny shovel & when he asks what it's for say it has two uses. One to hit your dog over the head and two to bury it.
Or you could be more subtle & after your neighbor goes to bed dig a grave in the community yard & put out a head stone with the dogs name on it. I think he will get the hint.
Don't get me wrong. I feel for the dog. It really is the owners fault.

Report it to your landlord. Let them be the bad guy. Also mention that he does not have the required insurance & if the land lord does nothing about it & they are aware of the problem then they will be liable in the future.

Plus very important! Have every conversation with the property manager documented! & you keep a copy as well. I can not stress how important that is!

Most of the "pit bull" stories I hear of start out like this, attacking animals then later attacking KIDS/(Im guessing they confuse small kids for other animals)and or there owners. For now he needs to put a lock on the gate so the kids wont accidently get into his yard and get bit and of course letting the pit out.
I would have taken your dog to the vet yesterday! He could have internal injuries or some sort of nervre damage that could pop up later. He flips the bill!!
I would also level with him and tell him either you or he needs to call the authorites, before something serious happens later and you regret it. mad

Thanks for the advice guys. I think I'm going to tell him tomorrow he needs to find it a new home, or put it down. I almost wish I wasn't friends with him so I could just call the cops and let them take care of it. I don't want our dogs to end our friendship as he is a good guy.

At the same time my dog bit him pretty bad as he was laying on top of his dog as it tried to end my dog's life. It's a tough situation, he even said he was going to put his dog down, but as I was talking to him after it happened he mentioned "locking him in his cage 24/7" so I fear he won't do anything about it and the situation will only get worse.

What do I if he says he won't get rid of him or put him down? Do I threaten to call the cops and of course I'd have to if he wouldn't listen. This is way too complex. Strangly the fact that my dog bit him makes me not as angry...

I want to clarify something in response to a couple of posts.

I live in a townhome complex. Most people have dogs around me, and behind their place have a chain by a big row of trees that they leave their dogs out to chill, whatever. His pit is crazy, and it "normally" only goes outside when he has it on a leash, it goes to the bathroom, right back inside.

Tonight (it happened @ 8:30 pm EST) his daughter opened the door thus letting his dog out. My dog was chillin on his chain. His dog got out and went staight to my dog and attacked.

He has been a good friend of mine for 3 years, which is what makes this difficult. It's not a situation where I would do what I should do (call the cops), and it's not a situation where I'm going to poison his dog as he lives right nextdoor to me and we hang out on pretty much a daily basis...

If there are other neighbors that could have possibly witnessed what happened tonight(from a window, or in the community area) you should act as an "Anonymous Concerned Neighbor" and call the police and tell them that you saw a dog attack another man's(you) dog, and that you are afraid for your childs safety because one of them was a pit bull that wasn't chained up. Maybe even call the rental office. Act as the third party when you call, tell them you don't want any trouble and would like to remain anonymous, then act surprized when the cops or the rental office show up at both of your doors to find out what happened. It may sound ****ed up, but at least he won't think you ratted him out when they ask to see insurance for the dog. That's what I would do. What if the next time your son is playing with your dog when the pit gets loose?

You may not get a second chance to do this right. Think how crappy you'd feel if the dogs next victim was a kid and you did nothing. Talk to the guy, if you can't persuade him it's time for plan B....
Good luck!

Yea, I'd agree with everyone's posistion on this, make him get rid of the dog. It's not gonna be worth it when it attacks one of your kids. Because you will kill that dog and probably want to kill your friend, who won't probably be a friend anymore. Btw, why do you have a handgun, with small children in the house? confused

I have owned many dogs, and am currently getting ready to purchase a Neopolitian Mastiff, so I really dont care what about what an adult dog will do to my adult dog. It WILL handle itself. And I will socialize it to be acclimated to others, from a very young age. That is the whole idea with agrresive breeds, socliation is VERY important. (and I dont care, Pits are NOT a breed but a mongrel with poor breeding, flame away.)

BUT I must add that any dog that threatens my family will be dealt with firmly, whether I grab the SW .40 or the Ruger .44 SuperBlawkHawk. Friends or not, it will go down.

And I cannot comment on your state's law, but here in WV my actions would be legal.

Malibu Stacy - you have a PM

bkent - somehow report him "anonymously" about the insurance and do the same about the dog! If the dog has not killed, than why kill it? I mean I know (trust me I have been attacked by a canine before) how bad they can attack, but it all comes down to the owner. How are they treating the dog? Like suggested before, I think the pit needs to be relocated.

Exactly what I was thinking... A couple hot dogs marinated in that tasty green stuff would do just fine. I hate people who are so blind and ignorant to realize that their dog is out of control.
